Teaching & Workshops

*** March 2023  - Apologies - I'm not taking on new students at the moment. You are very welcome to join my waitlist or I can point you towards other nearby harp teachers ***

I’ve been teaching music since 2004, teaching classical music and folk / trad harp. I tailor my methods to suit each student and enjoy working with all ages. Learning an instrument is a journey, and I like helping my students find the ways that work best for them and the music they like the most.

What?

  • Classical music, learning to listen, read and play

  • ABRSM & Trinity practical exams & digital performance grades, Grade 5 theory

  • Folk / trad harp - different repertoires and styles including Irish and English

  • The traditional harpers’ skill set – working by ear, arrangement, improvisation and composition

Who?

  • Children and teenagers - one to one after school

  • Adults - one to one during the day

  • Adults - one to one weekend workshops

How?

Under normal circumstances I welcome people to my home in south Oxford. During the pandemic I am offering zoom lessons only. If you are new to zoom I am very happy to help support you as you learn to use the software.

Where I teach and where I’ve taught

I have been teaching since 2004 and currently teach harp privately in south Oxford and as a visiting music teacher at Magdalen College School. I also teach Grade 5 theory at Magdalen College School. I have previously taught alongside Colette Keaveney at the London Irish Music School (2007 – 2015), for Shooting Roots at folk festivals (2008 – 2015), at the Dragon School (2014 – 2018), at Radley College (2019 - 2022) as well as many other projects: Guildhall’s centre for Young Musicians with EFDSS, for Goldsmith’s University, for the Edinburgh International Harp Festival and the Clarsach Society.

Harp Hire

I have small harps for students to rent, suitable for the first 3 months – 1 year. To find out more about these, email me. I can also put you in touch with other hiring / purchase sources for larger instruments. Hiring a 34 string lever harp suitable for an adult or commited child costs £30 – £65 approx per calendar month.

Parts for school ensembles

I am happy to arrange parts for school ensembles. These normally take me 1 – 2 hours and are charged at my hourly teaching rate.

Grade 5 Theory

If you want to take Grade 6 or above on the ABRSM syllabus then you need Grade 5 theory. I really enjoys teaching this, so get in touch if you would like some help towards your exam.
